Smugglers Run Course Map
The Smugglers run used to take place on the early May bank holiday and was held on land owned by Mr Dickens and Mr Robinson. The race was ran over 24 obstacles which was completed in teams of 4 whilst carrying a barrel. Teams had a joker which enabled them to miss one obstacle and these included crossing the canal and haybale mazes. The run became very popular and saw military teams enter and was even sponsored by the Herald and Post. A forerunner to the very popular Tough Mudder runs we see today.

This article appeared in the Chronicle and Echo (date) and features Ian Green, Gillian Ashby, Matthew Wallis, Odette Jones, Alison Conway, Karen Parish and James Wallis.
It talks about how the children raised £16 for the Mayor's chosen charity which was a Garden for the Blind appeal fund. They collected the money by doing odd jobs such as car washing around the village during the school holidays.

The children were all aged between seven and eleven and as a special "thank you" for their fundraising efforts they were invited to the visit the Mayor's Parlour.
The Mayor at the time was Councillor David Walmsley.

Firleys 1990 (Former conservation area by fishing lakes)
In the picture are Kerry Faulkner, Michelle Partridge and Jodie Boyson looking at wildlife (picture appeared in the Chronicle and Echo)
The pond was excavated by Pioneer Aggregates who were already working in the area digging out the fishing lakes for Mr Dickens.
The school children used to regularly walk across the fields up to the conservation area and complete pond dipping, they would then draw the insects when they got back to school.
